The Stoning of Steven
1635
This painting depicts a scene from the Book of Acts 7:54-60 when the Jewish leaders stoned one of Jesus’ apostles, Stephen. The painting is divided into two zones, dark and light: on the left, a man on horseback is in the shadow, and on the right, Stephen and his persecutors are in the light. Saul of Tarsus, who later became Paul the author of many books in the Bible, is seated in the background, holding in his lap the coats of the stoners. The person behind Stephen is another self-portrait, again depicting himself as one who sins against the Lord—a sinner in need of Our Savior.
After reading the Bible story, study the painting for five minutes. Look at each individual and their facial expression. Examine their clothing. Study the buildings and the colors RembraAfterwards, without looking, describe as much of the painting as you can.
